Welcome to the Modern Railwayana website.

The site is very much ‘work in progress’ and by the nature of both the evolving modern railway and the fact that some sections will need considerable research is likely to be forever that way!

Primarily the site will be concerned with traction and rolling stock items from the modern era since the sectorisation of British Rail in the 1980s and the explosion of colour after the years of corporate BR Blue. If this era isn’t your thing, don’t despair, have a look in our sales area where you may find something of interest that is a little bit older!

Thunderbirds are gone!

A full report for the Sheffield Railwayana Auction will appear in the auction report area later but for now the results for the Thunderbird nameplate sales today were as follows:

Prices are hammer prices and require 12% premium adding.

Class 87 nameplates on display.

Following a move to new offices in Derby, Porterbrook Leasing have put five class 87 nameplates on display in the reception area. The five nameplates are listed by the Railway Heritage Committee and have been restored in red to create a striking entrance to the offices. The photo below was taken through the window as the office was closed when I called by!

The following is from the Virgin Trains Press Office:

Virgin Trains supported charity CLIC Sargent will benefit from the sale of 12 sets of ‘Thunderbird’-themed nameplates following its withdrawal of six Class 57 locomotives from service..

CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, is Virgin Trains’ supported charity. The partnership has raised more than £310,000 since 2009 and Virgin Trains is continuing to support CLIC Sargent until 2012.

The nameplates will be sold at a specialist railwayana auction in Derby on 10 December 2011 by Sheffield Railwayana Auctions Limited.

The locomotives involved are:

57301 Scott Tracy
57303 Alan Tracy
57305 John Tracy
57306 Jeff Tracy
57310 Kyrano
57312 The Hood

Network Rail is looking to take over the six Class 57 locomotives for specialist seasonal duties south of the River Thames. The locomotives have previously been part of Virgin Trains’ 16-Stong Class 57/3 fleet, but are no longer required by the West Coast train operator.

RAILWAYANA FORUM RETURNS!

Some people who remember the original incarnation of the Modern Railwayana website will remember the forum. This had become a popular feature where people could chat, exchange views and offer for sales and wants, etc. Unfortunately for reasons I'll not go in to here it was shut down shortly before the old site took a break from cyber space before returning in the current forum. Lots of people have asked me if the forum was to return and the answer was always 'no', however, I'm pleased to report that a friend has decided to step up to the mark and create a new railwayana forum. Whilst it does not form part of this website and I am not responsible for the running of it I am more than happy to promote it and will put a permanent link for it on this site in due course.
