Welcome to the Modern Railwayana website.

The site is very much ‘work in progress’ and by the nature of both the evolving modern railway and the fact that some sections will need considerable research is likely to be forever that way!

Primarily the site will be concerned with traction and rolling stock items from the modern era since the sectorisation of British Rail in the 1980s and the explosion of colour after the years of corporate BR Blue. If this era isn’t your thing, don’t despair, have a look in our sales area where you may find something of interest that is a little bit older!

Spate of HST namings in recent weeks

Posted by Modernrailwayana on Sunday, May 16, 2010

The last few weeks have seen a spate of namings of HST power cars. On the 10th March First Great Western named 43053 'University of Worcester' at Worcester station. Then on the 19th April 43025 became 'The Institution of Railway Operators 2000 - 2010 TEN YEARS PROMOTING OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE' followed 4 days later on the 23rd by 43056 gaining the title 'The Royal British Legion'.

Also at Great Western, 43189 has regained the 'RAILWAY HERITAGE TRUST' nameplates during an exam at Laira being released to traffic on the 6th May. These nameplates were removed during the re-engineering of the power car at Loughborough. Not to be left out, East Midlands Trains named 43076 at St.Pancras on the 13th May 'IN SUPPORT OF HELP for HEROES'.

Something a little different

Posted by Modernrailwayana on Monday, April 05, 2010

It is said we are all a product of our generation, or something like that, and being a teenager in the early 90's I remember regular visits to Brush Traction at Loughborough to see the brand new class 60s coming off the production line. Often they were named and not numbered and the names always stuck in my head. Being from North Wales I was familiar with Moel Famau (I can see it from the garden), Crib Goch, Moel Siabod, etc but the Scottish ones especially had a magic about them. Just where are An Teallach, Quinag, Foinaven.... Anyway, the years passed and my interest wained until an impulse buy at a Great Central Auction at Stoneleigh changed everything. I'd bought one of those mountain nameplates that had been spotted from the field at Loughborough nearly 20 years ago. The flicker of interest had been re-ignited - then, one night, after a couple too many single malts I suggested to a friend and fellow collector that we should actually attempt to climb all the 60s! He (stupidly) agreed there and then without checking up on what we were getting in to and the rest as they say is history. We've now climbed four of them and will be doing the others as time permits but if anyone wants a chuckle at two mad men then please click the link for the picture pages here
