<title>Thunderbirds are Go(ing)...</title>
<link>http://www.modern-railwayana.co.uk/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=20</link>
<description>The following is from the Virgin Trains Press Office:

Virgin Trains supported charity CLIC Sargent will benefit from the sale of 12 sets of ‘Thunderbird’-themed nameplates following its withdrawal of six Class 57 locomotives from service..

CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, is Virgin Trains’ supported charity. The partnership has raised more than £310,000 since 2009 and Virgin Trains is continuing to support CLIC Sargent until 2012.

The nameplates will be sold at a specialist railwayana auction in Derby on 10 December 2011 by Sheffield Railwayana Auctions Limited.

The locomotives involved are:
57301 Scott Tracy
57303 Alan Tracy
57305 John Tracy
57306 Jeff Tracy
57310 Kyrano
57312 The Hood

Network Rail is looking to take over the six Class 57 locomotives for specialist seasonal duties south of the River Thames. The locomotives have previously been part of Virgin Trains’ 16-Stong Class 57/3 fleet, but are no longer required by the West Coast train operator.

<title>RAILWAYANA FORUM RETURNS!</title>
<link>http://www.modern-railwayana.co.uk/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=17</link>
<description>Some people who remember the original incarnation of the Modern Railwayana website will remember the forum. This had become a popular feature where people could chat, exchange views and offer for sales and wants, etc. Unfortunately for reasons I'll not go in to here it was shut down shortly before the old site took a break from cyber space before returning in the current forum. Lots of people have asked me if the forum was to return and the answer was always 'no', however, I'm pleased to report that a friend has decided to step up to the mark and create a new railwayana forum. Whilst it does not form part of this website and I am not responsible for the running of it I am more than happy to promote it and will put a permanent link for it on this site in due course. RAILWAYANA FORUM Click on the link above to go there, you will need to register to be able to read postings or post yourself.

<link>http://www.modern-railwayana.co.uk/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=11</link>
<description>With the end of another year fast approaching I found myself pondering today the items that we have seen through auction this year. This led me to try and compose a top ten of modern loco items seen around the auctions during the year. This is purely my opinion and based on nothing more than personal preference! I welcome other peoples lists which I'll post up on here if I receive any!I've stuck more strictly to the period since sectorisation in the mid 1980s. So here we go:

1.Nameplate - City of Derby ex APT 49003 and later HST power car 43107.
2.Nameplate - Robert A Riddles ex 86102
3.Nameplate - Thane of Fife ex 87033
4.Nameplate - Sans Pareil ex 86214

<title>Spate of HST namings in recent weeks</title>
<link>http://www.modern-railwayana.co.uk/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=7</link>
<description>The last few weeks have seen a spate of namings of HST power cars. On the 10th March First Great Western named 43053 'University of Worcester' at Worcester station. Then on the 19th April 43025 became 'The Institution of Railway Operators 2000 - 2010 TEN YEARS PROMOTING OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE' followed 4 days later on the 23rd by 43056 gaining the title 'The Royal British Legion'. Also at Great Western, 43189 has regained the 'RAILWAY HERITAGE TRUST' nameplates during an exam at Laira being released to traffic on the 6th May. These nameplates were removed during the re-engineering of the power car at Loughborough. Not to be left out, East Midlands Trains named 43076 at St.Pancras on the 13th May 'IN SUPPORT OF HELP for HEROES'.

<title>Something a little different</title>
<link>http://www.modern-railwayana.co.uk/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=6</link>
<description>

It is said we are all a product of our generation, or something like that, and being a teenager in the early 90's I remember regular visits to Brush Traction at Loughborough to see the brand new class 60s coming off the production line. Often they were named and not numbered and the names always stuck in my head. Being from North Wales I was familiar with Moel Famau (I can see it from the garden), Crib Goch, Moel Siabod, etc but the Scottish ones especially had a magic about them. Just where are An Teallach, Quinag, Foinaven.... Anyway, the years passed and my interest wained until an impulse buy at a Great Central Auction at Stoneleigh changed everything. I'd bought one of those mountain nameplates that had been spotted from the field at Loughborough nearly 20 years ago. The flicker of interest had been re-ignited - then, one night, after a couple too many single malts I suggested to a friend and fellow collector that we should actually attempt to climb all the 60s! He (stupidly) agreed there and then without checking up on what we were getting in to and the rest as they say is history. We've now climbed four of them and will be doing the others as time permits but if anyone wants a chuckle at two mad men then please click the link for the picture pages here</description>
